"Going Rogue" - Made From 100% American Concentrate (The review I wrote for my school paper that is garnering the contempt of all conservatives at my school.)

After reading “Going Rogue”, Sarah Palin’s new book, I have never read anything that has so convincingly argued that humanity no longer has any hope. Reading her book is kind of like watching someone walking backwards towards a cliff; only you know what they’re getting themselves into, and you know its going to be really grisly when it happens. “Going Rogue” is Sarah Palin’s memoir, recounting her down home, Alaskan frontier childhood, and leading us along her path to fame up to the horrifying climax, her 2008 Vice Presidential campaign. Her description of her family life is kind of like drinking a smoothie made out of Norman Rockwell paintings, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, and 1950’s nostalgia.

Every other sentence is folksy little idioms such as “scrapping like wolverines,” and she forces so many generic conservative American ideals into it, it’s painful. Palin accompanies tales of meeting her current husband with comments about how hardworking he was and how his family pulled themselves up by their bootstraps; as if he is some god of rugged American frontier capitalism that we should all aspire to be. The book even includes family photos, if you needed to be further convinced that she’s just a regular Jane, just like us.

The rest of the book is mostly focused on her 2008 Vice Presidential campaign, and how frighteningly close we got to electing a naive, unrealistic and ultimately destructive Alaskan politician into the second highest office in the country. Do we really want a Vice President who argues, “Here’s my philosophy on being a carnivore: If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat?” Palin goes on about ridiculous irrelevant slander about Obama, about him “paling around with terrorists,” and how the media misrepresented her and led to her demise, despite the fact she probably had the entirety of Rupert Murdoch’s right wing propaganda machine working for her.

“They edited out a discussion of the need to wean ourselves off hydrocarbons…Did Katie [Couric] think Americans wouldn’t be interested to know that I was in favor of alternative energy sources and reducing our carbon footprint? Or that I might be a conservative who was pro-development and pro-environment? ” Palin said in her book. It seems awfully contradictory to be pro-development and pro-environment, and I seriously doubt someone who promotes shooting wolves from helicopters could be misconstrued as an environmentalist.

I am no liberal by any means, I don’t subscribe to the idea that buying “eco-friendly” products and holding signs is going to change anything, and I don’t subscribe to any party in our very limited political spectrum, but regardless, I realize that Sarah Palin is probably the worst thing to happen to American politics since Richard Nixon. She’s an unintelligent, unprepared, war mongering politician whose ideals border on theocratic fascism, and to put her in any position of leadership is probably the gravest error anyone could make.

This book is just a feeble attempt to seem relevant in the political world, but if Americans have any sense, no one will give her any attention. Maybe, if we don’t listen, she’ll just go away.
